Sometimes It Seems Like There’s No Color When It Snows

manhattan bridge in the snow

Thankfully, I’ve escaped cold, grey New York to go to the land of green palm trees and blue water. I’m relaxing in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Unfortunately my camera battery died on me yesterday so there will be limited photos from this vacation. But it didn’t die before I managed to sneak up on a couple of gay monkeys having sex. How do I know they were gay? They both had penises. And they say that homosexuality is a choice. I beg to differ. And I’m sure those monkeys do, too.

dumbo, brooklyn graffiti

I took this in Dumbo, Brooklyn last week after it snowed.

About a year ago, under the spell of lazy Senioritis and the impending graduation that would set me off into the world to hopefully become a contributing member of society, a casual phrase I would toss out from time to time was, “I probably won’t be sleeping for the next 5 years.” At the time, it was kind of a rebuttal to the fact that I would be financially cut off come summertime and figured I would be working a full time day job plus waitressing/bar tending to afford living in one of the most expensive cities in the world. Leaving to live somewhere cheaper wasn’t an option, but neither was living off of Daddy’s money anymore.

So now, a year later, I’m finding that the reasons for my lack of sleep differ a bit than expected. I’ve developed into a “work hard, play hard” state of mind. I’ve found that while I can afford the same lifestyle that I had as a college student, I actually have money - and time - leftover, leading me to take on more projects, yet never turning down an invitation to happy hour. Time is kind of like purses: no matter how big of a bag you buy, you’ll always find more crap to fill it up. However, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s just a matter of filling it with pretty and useful things rather than letting the gum wrappers and receipts accumulate into a pile of junk.

That being said, I’m heading to Florida tomorrow and will hopefully return rebalanced and refocused. I plan to get a lot of sleep.

I Busted Up My Blog

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Woops!  Being the smart cookie I am, I installed the new Wordpress software without backing up all of the edited CSS.  So please excuse the look of the site for the next couple of days while I make a valiant attempt to get it back to where it was — and possibly improve upon it since I have to basically start from scratch.

Snowy Day in Brooklyn

dumbo, brooklyn in the snow

This was taken in Dumbo on Friday. It’s the only significant snowfall New York has seen all winter. By the afternoon, though, it was more of a piss drizzle and everything was already turning to slush. Yeah, there’s no global warming. Right.

Monterosso

monterosso, italy

This photograph was taken in Le Cinque Terre (The Five Lands) in Italia in October of 2006. This piece of land is very appropriately named as there are 5 fishing towns all within “walking” distance of each other. When we set out that morning, we had no idea we would be hiking over cliffs, mountains, and olive fields, so I was very inappropriately dressed in my little orange sundress and brown Reef sandals. However, I will vouch that Reef makes the BEST sandals on the market. Old Navy flip flops would never have gotten me through the day. Seriously, go buy a pair.

Monterosso was the last town of the 5 and the sun was already down when I photographed this rock. Italy has some of the most amazing terrain I have seen to date. This was, without a doubt, one of the best days of my life.

amsterdam canal

This was taken on a beautiful October day in Amsterdam. It was the only sunny day that we were there and it was a pleasure to see the city when it wasn’t raining. I’m hoping my trip back there in April will have lots of days like this because I definitely did not take as many photographs as I should have. I was far too busy doing other things…

Casa de Gaudi

barcelona, spain

This was taken on a rooftop in Barcelona in October of 2006. The interior of the building was somewhat cool, but the rooftop had the coolest, most interesting architecture. I love that this looks like a face.

My City Car

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Regardless of the fact that I want to feel as bad-ass Charlize Theron in The Italian Job, I’ve said for a few years that the only car I would buy in this city is a BMW Mini Cooper. Apparently I’m better at picking cars than I thought. The Mini Coop is listed in Yahoo! Best Cars for City Dwellers because it’s easy to maneuver, accelerates well, doesn’t guzzle gas, has electronic stability control, and excellent safety technology. Sign me up. I want one. Either that or a hot pink Vespa.

Via Dell’ Alloro

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

This was taken out of my bedroom window when I was studying abroad in Florence, Italy in the Fall of 2006. We lived on the top floor and had the entire floor to ourselves. As great as that was, there were a few issues including bed bugs, massive amounts of mosquitoes lasting until December, and a weird stench from one of the bathrooms that never really went away. Regardless, when this photo was taken, I hadn’t been there for longer than 24 hours and was absolutely thrilled. This was the Italy I had imagined.
